8 Secrets About WordPress You Must Know In 2018

Most bloggers use WordPress because it is free and relatively easy to use.  However, since WP Is a DIY(Do It YourSelf) site, you may find yourself spending hours scouring the Internet for tips and secrets to use WP features that may initially stump you.  Instead of doing that, read this article to learn about the best kept WP secrets and become a WP maestro!

Use a WordPress Custom Home Page

This is because the homepage, or the landing page, is WP’s default page where all posts automatically show up.  You will need to create that page when you set up your WP account, and name it the homepage.  Since your homepage will never change, you want to go to settings, and select the reading option in your WP admin dashboard.  You choose ‘a static page’ option in the Front page displays section.  You can then select the page just created as your homepage, and the other pages as your blog pages.

  1. You have the option of creating a homepage template for your homepage as well.  In this case, you would create a new file on your computer with a plain text editor, and copy and paste the following code:  <?php /* Template Name: Custom Homepage */>.
  2. You then save this file as ‘custom homepage’ on your desktop.
  3. You use FTP client to connect the homepage to your website.  You do this by going to wp-content/themes/your-current-theme/ folder.  You then upload the file to this folder.
  4. Go back to the admin area of your dashboard because you want to edit your homepage.
  5. Go to the Page Attributes metabox and select the custom homepage template under the templates section.
  6. Your homepage will be blank until you edit it.  You have the option of using HTML/CSS, and custom WordPage template tags to add to your landing page.  You can use a page builder plugin using drag and drop tools to do the same thing.

Install Google analytics in WordPress

  2. You should use MonsterInsights plugin to install Google Analytics on your site.
  3. If you copy and paste the code into your dashboard, you will have to repeat the process every time you update the site

Use a password to protect your WordPress Admin Directory

  1. . You need a password because this is where all of the key information regarding your website resides.
  2. You will have an automatic password because you are required to provide one when you set up your WP account, but having another password doesn’t hurt, and may actually help you because it is added security – it also makes it much more difficult for hackers (who are always roaming the web) to access your account.
  3. To enable password protection for your admin dashboard, you log into the cPanel dashboard of your WP hosting account
  4. You go to the security section and click on the ‘Password Protection Directories’ icon.
  5. You choose the directories you want the password to protect, and you create a username and password.

  1. You want to do this because it makes your site look more organized and professional, and people want to visit such sites.
  2. You can do this by displaying images in thumbnail sizes in a grid format on your site.

Allow users to subscribe to the comments section

  1. This saves them the hassle of having to manually revisit your site to see their and others comments once they have commented on your website
  2. You can make them happier by installing the Subscribe to Comments Reloaded plugin to ensure that they get automatic notifications regarding comments on your posts
  3. You visit the settings section of your WP admin dashboard and install the plugin

  1. If you do this, your pages will load faster and this will entice more people to come to your site because long load times tend to turn people away.
  2. This secret also avoids the risk of content duplication which will make your blog site look untidy and unprofessional – not an image you want to project to the public

Add a custom default gravatar image

  1. This will display either your photo or a ‘mystery image’
  2. You want this image because it increases traffic to your website
  3. You can custom design your gravitar image by doing the following
  4. Upload the desired image to your WP media library
  5. Then you copy the image file URL
  6. You then copy and paste the following code to your site’s functions.php file, or site specific plugin:

add_filter( ‘avatar_defaults’, ‘wpb_new_gravatar’ );

function wpb_new_gravatar ($avatar_defaults) {

$myavatar = ‘http://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/wpb-default-gravatar.png’;

$avatar_defaults[$myavatar] = “Default Gravatar”;

return $avatar_defaults

You replace the $myavatar value with the name of your custom avatar.

Go to the discussions section of the settings part of your dashboard, and you will see that your selected gravatar now appears.
